A very successful licensing exam was conducted by the Committee of Examiners for Massage Therapist (CEMT) last June 6, 2012 at the DEP-Ed Social Hall Iloilo City. More than two hundred (200) massage practitioners were able to take the said exam and one hundred sixty three (163) of them were students of Remnant Institute of Alternative Medicine (RIAM), seventy nine (79) were endorsed by two other training institutions in western visayas.
Remnant initiated a satellite training in Dumaguete City in coordination with the City health and Spa association sending 13 examinees considered as the pioneering group of massage practitioners and spa operators who are complying with the Licensing mandated by the DOH.
In response to the CEMT Resolution pertaining to the suspension of "High school diploma" as requirement for massage therapy licensure examination for year 2012, sixty one (61) blind massage practitioners took the chance of being trained and be a licensed massage therapists. Majority of them have no educational background and are financially unstable to undergo training. With the underlying constraint, RIAM provided a 50% scholarship grant to all visually impaired students and created a special training scheme with the use of audio training manual to optimized learning. Despite the limitation they were still able to take the exam using a special answer sheet where they personally did the shading assisted by the Philippine Association of Licensed Massage Therapist (PALMT) Iloilo chapter.
The surge of examinees in the recently conducted licensing examination showed the positive compliance of massage therapists whether sighted or visually impaired and also the massage establishment operators in the mandate (AO 2010-0034). Dr. Kenneth Ronquillo, chairman of the CEMT emphasized the goal of the DOH in professionalizing massage therapy and building the skill as a viable and decent career to the practitioners. He also underlined the moratorium stating the grace period for existing massage therapy establishments to comply with the mandate which will end in "December of 2014, that all massage practitioners should be licensed under the Department of Health.
