It is estimated that patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes have an average reduction of life expectancy by up to 10 years, depending on their age, treatments, and lifestyle factors.
is there a chance for remission & reversal?
Today more than ever, we already understand the complex metabolic processes involved in the development of Prediabetes and Diabetes Type 2. The increasing number of clinical evidence consistently showed effective remission and reversal of Prediabetes and Diabetes type 2 in many patients who have undergone intensive lifestyle intervention supplemented with diabetes medications.
These patients were motivated to finally take the leap of getting actively involved in taking charge of their condition to achieve remission and reversal with longer life expectancy, increased overall health outcome, and improved quality of life. This contrasts with the traditional dependence on pills, where patients are just left with a passive role in managing their disease and typically end up with a bunch of pills and injectable medications with inevitable life-threatening complications and decreased life expectancy.

WHAT IS DIABETES REMISSION?
Diabetes in remission is defined when patients are able to get their HbA1c below 6% without taking diabetes medications while maintaining a lifestyle intervention.
WHAT IS DIABETES REVERSAL?
Reversal of diabetes usually refers to a significant long-term improvement in insulin sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes and free from diabetes medications.

The impact of Diabetes on a patient's life expectancy largely depends on how soon a patient is diagnosed and receives adequate treatment. It appears that, with early diagnosis and effective management utilizing lifestyle modification, many patients can expect a longer life expectancy and have a good quality of life than those without diabetes living with a faulty lifestyle.
reduced life expectancy
Type 2 diabetes is a complex metabolic condition with many variables that are least likely reversed with pills. Patients are started with one medication and eventually end up taking a bunch more often than not. It is frustrating that Prediabetes and Diabetes Type 2 are already considered an epidemic affecting 1 in every 5 Filipinos. However, patients are not usually symptomatic, resulting in disease progression, and patients are usually caught with about 50% pancreatic B-cell dysfunction at the time of diagnosis.
A report from the United Kingdom estimated that patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes have an average reduction of life expectancy by up to 10 years and at least 20 years with type 1 diabetes. According to studies, the range of estimated life expectancies depends on many variables, including the patient’s age, treatments, and lifestyle factors.

modifiable lifestyle factors
Lifestyle modification is the primary intervention recommended for Prediabetes and Diabetes Type 2, and it is maintained for life even if medications are necessarily prescribed. However, many patients do not receive substantial lifestyle modification counseling with appropriate intensity, which corresponds to the severity of the condition. This often leads to sole dependence on medications as patients are not appropriately guided and, therefore, confused and unable to sustain even simple lifestyle changes.
It is important to remember that any condition and factors that worsen diabetes are likely to also shorten the life expectancy of the patient with the disease. This Intensive Therapeutic Change (ITLC) Program aims to address these significant risk factors and health conditions to help patients achieve remission and reversal of Prediabetes and Diabetes type 2 the soonest possible. We know for a fact that the longer a patient has diabetes, the more likely it is to reduce life expectancy. Thus, effective lifestyle changes can go a long way toward preventing this impact and its resulting serious life-threatening complications.
